It's Ada Lovelace day! If you look up in the sky tonight, take a moment to thank Henrietta Swan Leavitt for all her hard work. While slaving away as a poorly-paid "computer", she formulated a theory about the relationship between period and absolute magnitude of Cepheid variable stars, which was the key to figuring out the distances to other galaxies. She hasn't got a famous space telescope named after her, or a Nobel Prize, but she does have a crater on the moon, and an asteroid.
